How To Make Deodorant For Men (Unisex): a Fresh and Eco-Friendly Solution!

BY Ing. Žaneta Milošová (Havírová)

Do you use deodorant or are you just thinking about it?

Whether you use deodorant every day or have never tried it before, this tip may be an intriguing option for you! Why? Making your own deodorant can cost you only a few pennies and you can customize it to your exact needs. Approximately 150 ml of homemade deodorant costs only around 0.5-2 EUR, which is a great option whether you want to save money or want to treat yourself to a quality product without unnecessary chemicals. Most conventional deodorants contain substances that are not very gentle to the body or the planet. Aluminium, parabens, artificial dyes, or fragrances can all irritate the skin and contribute to the environmental burden. With your own deodorant, you choose exactly what you put on your skin. It’s affordable and sustainable! Who wouldn’t want to contribute to treating the planet better while looking and smelling great at the same time? 🌎✨

Who is the deodorant suitable for?

This men’s deodorant is great for those looking for natural odour control, and for those who haven’t used deodorant yet but would like to try something natural. It is suitable for those who like simple and effective solutions without unnecessary chemicals. Do you have sensitive skin? Then this deodorant is custom-made for you!

GG tip: I personally love the smell of cedar, and it truly is only a matter of what you like and are comfortable with. I often make and buy men’s deodorants because they simply smell better to me! It doesn’t really matter if you call it “men’s” or “women’s” deodorant – the important thing is what you like! 🥰

🧪 Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil – Moisturizes the skin and has mild antibacterial properties, which helps fight unpleasant odours.
  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda – Acts as a natural odour neutralizer.
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (or arrowroot) – Absorbs moisture and helps in keeping the underarms dry.
  • 10 drops of essential oil of your choice – Scents like cedarwood, sandalwood, tea tree, rosemary or peppermint or citrus are great for men’s deodorant…
Fragrance Tips:
  • Cedarwood  Gives your deodorant a pleasantly earthy, masculine aroma.
  • Rosemary and mint A great fresh combination that will give you a boost of energy.
  • Sandalwood An elegant and sophisticated scent.
  • Tea tree  Antibacterial and ideal for problematic skin.

💡 Optional:

  • 1 teaspoon of shea butter – Softens the skin and adds extra moisturising properties.

You can also use the ingredients to create other products such as: toothpaste, shaving cream, bath bombs

GG tip: Lately I’ve been told a lot: “Deodorant with baking soda? Don’t you think there should be something more gentle!” If you feel that way too, then voilà – you can use any of these ingredients to replace the baking soda 👉

  1. Ground rice or rice starch: also great at absorbing moisture and very gentle on sensitive skin.
  2. Kaolin (white clay): This fine powder is great for absorbing oil and moisture and is very gentle on the skin.
  3. Oatmeal (finely ground): Known for their calming properties, it can help to reduce the skin irritation.
  4. Clay powder: For example, bentonite clay powder, which is great for detoxifying and absorbing excess oil.

These alternatives can be used separately or combined to keep the deodorant effective and gentle on the skin.

✨ How to do it

  1. Melt the coconut oil and shea butter (if you want to use it) in a water bath over low heat.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients (baking soda and cornstarch) in a bowl.
  3. Gradually add the melted coconut oil and shea butter to the dry mixture and stir until a smooth paste is formed.
  4. Add the essential oils of your preference (cedarwood, peppermint or rosemary are great choices for a masculine scent) and stir the mixture again.
  5. Pour the mixture into a clean container with a lid (for example an old deodorant container or a small glass jar of about 150 ml).

GG tip: Some deodorant containers can be used over and over again, after thoroughly washing and drying them, of course. If you are not sure, you can buy a disposable paper wrapper or a reusable plastic wrapper online for about 1.5 EUR.

🔧 Use

Use the deodorant every morning or as needed. Put a small amount of deodorant on your fingers and gently rub it into your armpits.

GG tip: Smaller amounts, but more often! The natural deodorant is not the same as the conventional ones you buy. With the natural one, it’s better to apply less, but more often. It depends on how much you sweat and how your clothes rub against your skin at the area where you’ve applied the deodorant. Keep an eye on that! And be careful! If you put too much deodorant, it can bleach a dark shirt or other clothing. In the summer, the deodorant can melt a bit, so it’s better to keep it cool. Even if it melts, it will solidify back up, however, you should be careful not to let it spill out in your purse or bag.

⏳ How long does it last?

The deodorant will last about 3-4 months, depending on how often you use it. It lasts a long time because you only need a really small amount for each use. Store the deodorant in a sealed container in a cool place. In the summer, feel free to put it in the fridge so the coconut oil doesn’t melt.
