Mattifying Powder – Easy, Affordable and Healthy!

BY Ing. Žaneta Milošová (Havírová)

Do you have shiny skin and want to mattify it? Whether there’s a normal day, a photoshoot or a video-shoot ahead, we have the perfect solution for you! Make your own mattifying powder. This powder made from rice is the perfect natural alternative to conventional commercial products. It provides lightweight shine protection and is suitable for all skin types, especially combination and oily skin. It is easy to make, affordable and, thanks to the natural ingredients, gentle to your skin and the environment.

Personally, I only use this powder for photoshoots or filming days, either of myself or our experts 🙂. In fact, you only need to use the rice powder – you don’t need anything else! In case you’d like to add an extra effect, check out the other tips below.

Why should you choose the DIY mattifying powder?

  • Natural ingredients: Unlike conventional powders, this one does not contain chemicals, artificial colours or parabens.
  • Light and soft texture: It feels natural on the skin, does not weigh it down and does not clog pores.
  • Affordable: The ingredients are affordable and easy to find. A 100g of rice powder will cost you about 100 CZK (around 4 EUR), and cornstarch can be bought in a 200 g pack for about 30 CZK (1.5 EUR). You can combine them to create other beauty products such as deodorants or bath bombs.
  • Easy to make: It only takes a few minutes to make!

🧪 Ingredients:

  • 4 teaspoons of rice powder

Optional ingredients:

  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch (for extra mattifying effect)
  • A few drops of essential oil (e.g. lavender or tea tree for antibacterial effect, suitable for problematic skin)
  • Ground cocoa or cinnamon (for a subtle colour tone if you want the powder to blend better with your skin tone)

📦 Containers:

  • Small bowl
  • If you’re trying to grind your own rice powder, then a fine sieve
  • A resealable box (e.g. from a previous powder)

 ✨ How to do it

  1. Quick option: pour a small amount of rice powder into a resealable container and you’re done! 🙂
  2.  If you want to adjust the powder:
  • Preparation of rice powder: If you don’t have rice powder, you can make it by grinding dehydrated (dry) rice into a very fine powder and sifting it through a fine sieve. (I do not recommend this method, as it can leave larger particles that could scratch the skin.)
  • Mixing the ingredients: Mix the rice powder with the cornstarch in a bowl. Add a pinch of cocoa or cinnamon for colour tone (gradually add more until you reach your desired shade).
  • Optional steps: add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance and antibacterial properties. Essential oil, however, is not recommended for sensitive skin.
  • Sifting: Sift the mixture through the sieve again to make it smooth and evenly blended.
  • Storing: Put the mixture into a resealable box.

💁‍♀️ How to use the powder

Using a brush, gently apply the powder to your face, especially on shiny areas such as the forehead, nose and chin. Try NOT to INHALE it.

💚 What kind of skin is it suitable for?

  • Oily & combination skin: Absorbs excess oil like a pro

  • Sensitive skin: Natural & gentle – no irritation here

  • Acne-prone skin: Combine with essential oils for extra antibacterial power

Homemade powder = gentle, eco-friendly, and budget-smart 💰.
Your skin (and the planet 🌍) will love it 💖✨.

GG tip: You really only need the rice powder alone, which is perfect! Always beware of inhalation with powdery ingredients 😷. Avoid that as much as possible with all “dusty” products (powder, eyeshadow but also hair gels and more).
