Kiss of Poison: What Is in Your Lip Gloss?

BY MSc. Bára Haliková

Recently, we had the chance to attend a high school festival with our GreenScan app in hand, ready to explore what teens are actually using on their skin. We invited students to scan the products they had with them to see how the products score on health and environmental impact.

Can you guess the top three most common products we saw? You might not be surprised to hear:

  1. Sunscreen
  2. Deodorant
  3. And then…  Lip gloss 💄

So we got scanning.

Students were genuinely shocked to learn what was hiding in some of their everyday products. We’re talking endocrine disruptors, questionable preservatives, and even microplastics.

Now think about it, where do you think that gloss goes when we lick our lips, sip from a straw, or snack on something? That’s right – straight into our bodies.

This experience was a perfect reminder of why ingredient transparency matters. And why we need to rethink what we’re putting on our skin (and into our mouths) every day.

Let me show you some examples. These are real products scanned in our app, however we will not point fingers to specific products.

Look at this product, red, red, red, and many more red ingredients 😱

And this product, unfortunately, even worse….😡

Let’s look at some of the ingredients more closely:

Well, microplastics, endocrine disruptors or toxic when swallowed? This is not something I want to kiss my love with! What about you?

Microplastics – man-made solid polymers that are usually no bigger than 5mm. It is estimated that every week we eat around a spoonful of microplastics. They act as a carrier of toxic chemicals into our bodies because of their sponge-like properties.

Endocrine disruptors – natural or human-made chemicals that can mess with your hormones by mimicking, blocking, or interfering with them, which can lead to various health issues.

What you put on your lips matters. Choosing safer, more sustainable lip care options isn’t just a beauty choice, it’s a health-conscious one too.

Curious about what’s in your lip gloss (or any other product you use daily)?
